Understanding UPI Transactions in Your Bank Statement

ConvertStatement Team·

UPI payments show up in your bank statement with a reference number and sometimes a partial description. Once you know the pattern, you can identify every transaction.

What the narration shows

A typical UPI entry looks like: "UPI-PAYTM PAYMENTS-9876543210@paytm-XXXXXX12345-UPI." The first part is the app or merchant name. The second part is the recipient's UPI ID. The number at the end is the UPI transaction reference.

Finding the original payment

Take the 12-digit UPI reference number from your statement. Open any UPI app you use - Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm. Go to transaction history and search for that reference number. You will see the full details including the recipient name and purpose.

When the narration is missing

Some banks show only "UPI" with a reference number and no other details. In that case use the NPCI UPI portal at upi.npci.org.in to look up the transaction reference. You will need to log in with your mobile number.

Disputed UPI transactions

If you see a UPI debit you did not make, report it immediately. Log a complaint with your bank within 3 working days. Also file a complaint on the NPCI helpline at 1800-120-1740. Speed matters for UPI reversals.
