HDFC Bank statements are among the cleaner formats in Indian banking, but there are still a few details that confuse first-time readers.
The header section
At the top of every HDFC statement you will find your account number, branch address, IFSC code, customer ID, and the statement period. There is also a summary showing opening balance, total debits, total credits, and closing balance. Check these summary figures first.
Transaction columns
HDFC uses 7 columns: Date, Narration, Value Date, Chq./Ref.No., Withdrawal Amt., Deposit Amt., and Closing Balance. The "Date" column shows when HDFC processed the transaction. The "Value Date" shows when it actually affected your balance (usually the same, but differs for some transfers).
Reading the narration
HDFC narrations for UPI payments show the format: "UPI-[App Name]-[Recipient ID]-[Reference]". For salary credits from employers, it typically shows "NEFT CR-[company code]-[your name]". For ATM withdrawals, it shows the ATM location code and city.
Standing instructions and auto-debits
Recurring payments set up through HDFC show as "SI-[description]" in the narration. ECS debits from loan accounts or insurance show as "ECS-[company name]". These help you identify all your automatic payments at a glance.
